Brief History of the Department

The Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education was created in year 2011 though it started in 1993 as a Physical and Health Education Programme in the Department of Educational Foundations and Management. The initial nomenclature of Physical and Health Education was later changed to Human Kinetics and Health Education as approved by the University Senate. The unrelenting efforts of the foundation members of the Department in the Faculty of Education are of great commendation, Professor G. A. Akinleye (the then Dean of Faculty of Education), Professor I. O. Akindutire, Professor J. A. Adegun and Dr. J.A. Adegboyega (now a Professor and the foundation Head of the Department) in making the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education a reality. The Department is currently having on its staff list four (4) Professors, seven (7) Senior Lecturers, seven (7) Lecturers 1 & 2 and two (2) Assistant Lecturers.

The Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education runs the undergraduate programmes in Health Education and Human Kinetics and Health Education and also Masters/Doctorate Degree Programmes in Administration of Physical Education and Sports, Physiology of Exercise, Health Education, Psychology of Sports and Sociology of Sports. The Department has produced Masters and Doctorate Degree holders since its inception. Human Kinetics and Health Education as a programme was awarded full accreditation in 2017. The Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education has a journal titled – Journal of Human Kinetics and Health Education Pedagogy (JOKHED). Information about this journal could be obtained in the Department website:  www.humankineticsedu.com.  The Department has produced outstanding students, National and International scholars and Athletes within and outside Nigeria.

Philosophy of the Department

The Philosophy of the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education is derived from the National Policy of Education which advocates education for self-reliance, democratic living and national unity. The Programme is developed on the fundamental assumption that the students are entitled to acquire basic theoretical and practical knowledge in Human Kinetics and Health Education that will equip them to face the challenges of life and render unique services to the society.

Objectives of the Department

Specific objectives of the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education are to:

  1. train high level personnel in various fields of Human Kinetics and Health Education and to develop academic and professional competency which will enable graduates earn a living and render unique services to the society.
  2. equip students with opportunity for improvement in in-depth training and techniques beyond first degree level for those who envisage a career in research, teaching and coaching.
  3. provide a board, general background which will facilitate the acquisition of the specialized competencies in Human Kinetics and Health Education, Sports and Recreation.
  4. produce middle level manpower for the Sports Councils, train career athletes and coaches to obtain Diploma Certificate in Human Kinetics and Sports.
  5. produce graduates that could construct and rehabilitate sports facilities and thereby make a living from it.
