Our Department is made up of talented researchers and support staff who are willing to impact knowledge and enhance human well-being.

Our Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is based on the need to train professional guidance counsellors whose responsibility is to assist individuals to determine their destiny. Individuals live in a society in which they have to face problems and are therefore problem solving organisms. Assisted individuals can improve their problem solving skills.

Individuals can make decisions, set life goals, interact with and utilize the environment and select life options. The Philosophy of the Department therefore, is effective development of individuals through training of personnel who will assist in achieving these goals.

Specifically, it is to train professionals/psychotherapists who would be charged with influencing the personality of youths at the different levels of schooling to develop suitable/desirable character traits and characteristics that would enhance their personal, social, spiritual and vocational lives.

The degree programme in Guidance and Counselling allows students to combine courses in Guidance and Counselling with courses in teaching subjects as Sciences, Art and Social Sciences. The rationale is to ensure that graduates of Guidance and Counselling, who serve in the primary secondary schools system, could counsel as well as teach their respective subjects to students. By teaching the subjects, they will have more contact with the students, thereby knowing them and their problems in order to nib such problems in the bud.
