Brief History of the Department

The Department stemmed from the then Educational Foundation and Management (EFM) Department now the Department of Educational Management (EDM) in 2011.The pioneer members of Academic Staff were 11 and presently, the Department has 8 members of Academic Staff of which five  are in the Professorial Cadre namely: Prof. O. B. Ajayi Vincent, Prof. P. O. Oyeniyi, Prof. (Mrs) P. E. Konwea, Prof. O. M. Bolarinwa, Prof. D. I. Adeagbo, Two Readers namely Dr (Mrs) A. O. Awosusi and Dr (Mrs) S.E. Ogunsile. And a Lecturer 1 namely: Dr (Mrs) O. O. Aina.

The leadership of the Department was pioneered by Dr J.A. Adegboyega (2011-2013) and progressed to Dr O. B. Ajayi-Vincent (2013-2015), Dr P.O. Oyeniyi (2015-2017), Dr (Mrs) P.E. Konwea (2017-2019), Dr M. O. Bolarinwa (2019-2021), Dr D.I. Adeagbo (2021-2023) , Dr (Mrs) A. O. Awosusi (2023-2025) and Dr (Mrs) S. E. Ogunsile (2025 till Date) respectively.

The Department offers courses both in Human Kinetics and Health Education and has produced notable alumni at both graduate and postgraduate levels in the fields such as academics, Health, industries, ministries, public service while substantial number of products from the Department are doing fine in their vocations outside the shore of Nigeria

Philosophy

The philosophy of the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education is in line with the University philosophy. Based on the National Policy on Education which advocates education for self-reliance, democratic living and national unity, the programmes in the Department are developed on the fundamental assumption that students are entitled to acquire basic theoretical and practical knowledge in physical and health education which will prepare them for the promotion of physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing of the populace

Objectives

The courses in the Department are designed to:

  • develop and inculcate the values of physical development
  • expose students to various sporting activities as effective means of building human relationship
  • provide learning experiences in healthcare and sanitation for self-development
  • produce highly motivated and efficient men/women capable of teaching Human Kinetics Education and Health Education
  • produce graduates that could construct and rehabilitate sport facilities thereby making a living from it
  • provide students with a broad and balanced foundation in the knowledge of first aid and safety education
  • instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for individual health, appreciation of its application in different areas and to involve them in intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying
  • provide students with knowledge and skills to proceed for further studies in specialized areas of health and multi-disciplinary areas involving health
