Brief History about the Department

The Department of Arts and Language Education was inaugurated in August, 2015. It is one of the nine departments in the Faculty of Education. The courses in the Department were initially domiciled in the Departments of Curriculum Studies and Educational

Foundations and Management at the inception of the Faculty of Education in 1983/84 academic session. The Department focuses on the methodology of teaching and coordinates students’ teaching practice programs in the Arts and Languages.

Master/Doctoral degree in Language Education and Philosophy of Education are run in the Department.  The Department has produced Master and Doctorate degree holders as units under the Department of Curriculum Studies and Foundations and Management. In the current restructuring, the following courses are housed by the Department.  English Language Education, Yoruba Language Education, French Language Education, Arabic Language Education, Christian Religious Studies, History and International Studies, Islamic Studies, Philosophy of Education, History of Education, Moral Education, Communication Arts Education, Language Teaching Methods, History and Religious Teaching Methods.

 

Philosophy of the Department

The underlining philosophy of the Department is to enhance the functions of the Faculty of Education through the provision of courses that are essential for the professional preparation of teachers at all levels of education. The Department produces graduates for the award of degrees in the following areas:

 

B.A.(Ed.) English Language

B.A. (Ed.)French Language

B.A. (Ed.)History and International Studies

B.A.(Ed.)Christian Religious Studies

B.A.(Ed.)Yoruba Language.

M. Ed. and Ph. D programmes are also available in all the above undergraduate courses

 

Objectives

The focus of the Department is to provide its students with a broad-based modern theoretical practical knowledge and skills to enable them function effectively as professional teachers. To this end, it is expected that graduates of the Department should be able to:

  • teach their chosen subjects effectively in the secondary schools;
  • infuse creativity with teaching and learning;
  • utilize their specialized training to give leadership on critical assessment and development of self-discipline;
  • inculcate in the students the spirit of enquiry, creativity and the ability to think critically and effectively in solving personal and other problems.
