Brief History of the Department
The Faculty of Education which is primarily responsible for the preparation of teachers at the graduate and diploma levels introduced its first set of undergraduate courses in the 1983/84 session. The Faculty is presently functioning with nine departments: Adult Education, Arts and Language Education, Guidance and Counseling, Educational Management, Human Kinetics and Health Education, Science Education, Social Science Education and Institute of Education.
The Department of Social Science Education was created from the former Department of Educational Foundations and Management in the Faculty of Education through the approval granted at the University Senate Meeting held on 30th May, 2012. Full operation of the Department of Social Science Education commenced on 17th August, 2015 with the following lecturers:

The Department has continued to progress under the leadership of Dr now Prof. (Mrs) F. M. Osalusi (the Pioneer Ag. HOD, 2015 – 2017), Dr. (Mrs) B. O. Abdu-Raheem (Ag. HOD, 2017 – 2019), Dr (Mrs) M. F. Oluwagbohunmi 2019-2021) and Dr (Mrs) H. F. Okunade (2021-2023). The current Ag HOD of the Department is Dr R. A Alonge. Presently, the Department has three members of non-academic staff: Mrs. S.I. Talabi, Mrs.J. B. Alabi and Mrs.D. E. Adekanmbi. The Department produced its maiden edition of Social Science Education Journal (SOSCED-J) in 2017. Two editions (Volumes 2:1 and 2:2) were produced in 2018 while Volume 3 was produced in 2019. Another two editions (Volumes 4:1 and 4:2) were added to the list of Journals produced in the Department in September 2020. Volume 5 Issue 1 of Social Science Education Journal was produced in August 2022.
Our Philosophy
The Department of Social Science Education is designed to make students acquire knowledge of the Social Sciences and understand their relevance to developing the society through effective teaching to ensure attainment of national objectives of education. The Department also provides adequate training for students through quality instruction to guarantee acquisition of competencies necessary for their development into sound and active teachers. The philosophy of the Postgraduate Programmes in Social Science Education is based on development of professional teachers who will be able to function effectively in teaching at both lower and higher levels of Education. The core aim is to prepare graduates for careers in teaching, learning and research in institutions of higher learning.
Objectives of the Department
Specific objectives of Social Science Education are to:
- provide a broad and general background which will facilitate acquisition of the specialized competencies in education;
- acquaint educators in training with specific theories in sociology, philosophy and management which are deemed indispensable for better education orientation of professional educators
- introduce educators in training to the basic techniques of research and professional education
- provide training of specialists in social science and allied subjects
- provide advanced training for higher degrees in specific foundation areas of Social Studies, Education Economics, Education Geography and Education Political Science.
Mission Statement of the Department
To ensure production of highly skilled teachers and manpower generally into the fields of Natural Science, Social Science and Humanities with a strong and sound academic professional training in education.
General Services and Academic Programmes
The function of the Department is to run Bachelor Degree programmes in the following four subject areas:
- Sc.Ed. Social Studies – This programme is fully based in the Department.
- Sc (Ed) Economics –
- Sc. (Ed) Geography – In collaboration with the cognate Departments
- Sc. (Ed) Political Science – in the Faculty of the Social Sciences.
All the four undergraduate programmes of the Department were given full accreditation by the National Universities Commission in April 2016.
The Department also runs M.Ed Degree, M.Phil/Ph.D Degree and Ph.D Degree programmes in Social Studies. However, nine new Postgraduate programmes have been designed to give opportunities to prospective students who are interested in Postgraduate Programmes in Education Economics, Education Political Science and Education Geography. The programmes were approved by the ARC and Board of College of Postgraduate Studies and finally, the University Senate ratified the commencement of the programmes on 26th July, 2023.
General Administration
The HOD is the organizational head, the chairman in all meetings and the chief examiner of the Department in all examinations. The HOD manages the affairs of the Department with the use of committees such as:
